Iberia Express online check-in and boarding pass

With Iberia Express, check-in is the step that issues your boarding pass, confirms your seat and your seat number. It can be done online, at self-service kiosks in major Spanish airports, or at Iberia counters. This page brings together opening and closing times, required documents, baggage rules tied to check-in, and the situations that most often trip up passengers.

When online check-in opens and closes

Iberia Express online check-in opens 24 hours before departure. According to the airline's public information, tickets bought on its website can be checked in up to about an hour before take-off: don't count on the last minute, as access closes before the departure time shown on your ticket.

Sometimes the check-in button won't appear as open. The airline explains that, for operational reasons, online check-in isn't accessible in the days immediately before the window opens, that some airports only allow check-in from 24 hours before departure, and that this also applies to flights outside the Schengen area. In all these cases, the approach is the same: wait for the window to open. Iberia Express says it sends an email when check-in opens.

One thing worth knowing before you start: if you don't check in during this window, you'll have to select a seat to continue, and if seat choice isn't included in your fare, an extra cost applies.

How online check-in works, step by step

The process takes place under the My Flights section of the Iberia Express website. You identify yourself with your booking reference (the short string of characters at the top of your purchase confirmation email), your surname, and the departure airport.

Once everything is confirmed, the boarding pass can be downloaded as a PDF or received on your smartphone. Iberia Express also sends it once check-in is complete.

Boarding pass: format, printing and exceptions

The boarding pass obtained online comes as a PDF or on mobile. According to the airline's public information, checking in online lets you print your boarding pass at certain airports and skip the check-in desks when you have no checked baggage.

Two exceptions worth remembering. If you're travelling from Cairo or Marrakech, you must go to the check-in desk before reaching the security checkpoint, even if you've already checked in online. The airline also notes cases where the credit card used to pay for the tickets must be shown at the desk; at check-in kiosks, this card is requested, except for Iberia Plus Platinum, Gold or Silver customers who entered their card number when booking on iberiaexpress.com.

On the documents side, check before you travel that your papers are up to date: national ID card and/or passport for departure and destination countries within the EU and the Schengen area; passport and visas for other destinations and departure countries.

At the airport: desks, kiosks and cut-off times

The cut-off time is the point by which all boarding acceptance formalities and baggage check-in must be finished. It varies depending on the airport and the type of flight.

FlightDesk closing time
Schengen area (general rule)Roughly three quarters of an hour before scheduled departure
Madrid (MAD), terminal T4SSlightly earlier than the general Schengen rule
Amsterdam (AMS)60 minutes before departure
To or from outside the Schengen areaAbout an hour before departure

These times are the ones published by the airline; build in some margin and check the exact time shown on your booking and on the airport screens. Once the cut-off has passed, the passenger is not accepted on board and the airline applies its no-show rules, which carry fees calculated on the basis of the fare.

Self-service check-in kiosks are available at major Spanish airports: they issue your boarding pass and bag tags. They can be used for any Iberia Express destination, provided you don't need a passport check or another security or immigration requirement. After checking in, with or without baggage, you need to get to the boarding gate as quickly as possible, at the latest twenty minutes before the flight's departure. Passengers without baggage holding a boarding pass obtained in advance, travelling within Spain, the European Union or a Schengen signatory country, must present themselves half an hour ahead of time at an Iberia Express contact point in the terminal: boarding gate, check-in desk or information point.

Baggage: what's at stake at check-in

Cabin baggage is included in every Iberia Express fare bundle. The standard reference dimensions are 56 x 45 x 25 cm, including handles, pockets and wheels; sports equipment that stays within this size counts as your cabin bag.

Checked baggage must be handed over at the desk no later than 45 minutes before departure. Each passenger checks in their own baggage individually, and a checked bag is personal and non-transferable. For special baggage, the 23 kg threshold serves as a reference across several categories, and its transport must be booked at least 24 hours before boarding for it to be accepted. Special baggage fees are only settled at the airport, at the dedicated check-in desks.

In Madrid, baggage is dropped off at the dedicated desks indicated by the airline, which also apply to passengers already checked in online.

Common issues and last-minute check-in

The most common hold-up comes from the time window: until it opens, the button stays inactive, and an incorrectly entered booking reference (the short booking code, not the ticket number) has the same effect. A flight outside the Schengen area or a document verification requirement sends you back to the desk rather than the screen.

If online check-in doesn't work, kiosks at major Spanish airports and Iberia counters take over, within the closing times listed above. Arriving after the cut-off amounts to a no-show, with the fees that come with it: it's best to head to the airport well ahead of time when you have checked baggage, special baggage, or a destination outside Schengen. For Iberia Express flights, online check-in can also be handled by iBoardingPass, a paid service independent of the airlines, which carries it out as soon as check-in opens and sends the boarding pass by email.

Other airlines serving the same airports apply different rules: see Air Europa's check-in process, Binter's check-in guidelines for Canary Islands routes, Aer Lingus's procedure within the IAG group, or Air Nostrum's details.

Frequently asked questions

What time does Iberia Express online check-in open?

It opens 24 hours before departure. If your flight departs from a particular airport or a destination outside the Schengen area, the airline states that check-in only becomes available from that window. Before it opens, access is not available.

Until when can I check in online?

According to Iberia Express's public information, tickets bought on its website can be checked in up to about an hour before departure. Allow yourself some margin: online access closes before the departure time, and airport formalities have their own cut-off times.

What time do the check-in desks close?

For flights within the Schengen area, desks close roughly three quarters of an hour before the scheduled departure, with two exceptions: slightly earlier at Madrid's T4S terminal and 60 minutes before departure in Amsterdam. For flights to or from outside the Schengen area, closing happens about an hour before departure. Check the exact time on your booking.

When do I need to drop off my checked bag?

Checked baggage must be handed over at the desk 45 minutes before departure, even if you have already checked in online or at a kiosk.

What happens if I arrive after the cut-off time?

A passenger who has not completed all formalities by the cut-off time is not accepted on board, and the airline states that such refusal is not attributable to it. No-show and cancellation rules then apply, with fees calculated on the basis of the fare.

Do I still need to go to the desk if I've checked in online?

Generally not if you're travelling without checked baggage. However, departing from Cairo or Marrakech, you must go through the check-in desk before the security checkpoint, even if online check-in has already been completed. The desk is also required for checked baggage and special baggage.

What documents do I need along with my boarding pass?

The airline asks you to check that your travel documents are up to date: national ID card and/or passport for departure and destination countries within the EU and the Schengen area; passport and visas for other destinations and departure countries. Check-in kiosks are not suitable when a passport check or another security or immigration requirement is needed.

Is seat selection mandatory at check-in?

If you do not check in during the online check-in window before your flight, seat selection becomes mandatory to proceed. When seat choice is not included in your fare, an extra cost applies.

Why does a kiosk ask for my credit card?

The check-in kiosk system asks for the credit card used to pay for the tickets, except for Iberia Plus Platinum, Gold or Silver customers who entered their card number when booking and purchasing on iberiaexpress.com.
