Vueling check-in: at Birmingham it closes four hours before departure

Vueling names thirty-two airports where online check-in closes FOUR HOURS before departure, and Birmingham is one of them. The others include Basel, Geneva, Milan-Bergamo, Split, Dubrovnik, Malta, Helsinki, Oslo and Reykjavik.

Four hours is not a typo and not a system delay. It is the published rule for those airports, and it closes while most passengers are still deciding when to leave home.

Everywhere else, the number that applies to a UK departure is 1 hour 10, not 50 minutes. The 50-minute limit covers flights to and from the Schengen area — and the United Kingdom is outside it, so a London–Barcelona flight sits in the longer bracket in both directions.

The same applies at Amsterdam, at 1 hour 10, and Paris-Orly to a non-Schengen destination closes at 1 hour 25.

What to do with this. Read the time attached to your own booking rather than the general rule — including this page's. A rule that is right on average is wrong for whoever is standing at the exception, and here the exception is a UK airport.

One consequence for a return trip. The two legs can fall under different rules: a London departure at 1 hour 10 and a Birmingham return at four hours, or a Barcelona return at 1 hour 10 because the destination is outside Schengen. Each leg carries its own clock, and the outbound one tells you nothing about the way back.

Vueling publishes six different opening regimes, and none of them depends on the route: they depend on what you hold.

• Immediately, from the moment the booking is completed and up to 365 days before departure, on Fly, Fly Grande and Fly Pro fares and for Premium customers.
• 7 days before for Vueling Club members.
• 24 hours before on the Fly Light fare.
• 15 days before if, on Fly Light, you buy a seat.
• Immediately, if you add the no-queue pack or the baggage pack from My Trips.

So the lowest figure is not the safest one. A Fly Light passenger reading « 24 hours » believes they must wait, when buying a seat moves them to 15 days.

The regime depends on your fare and your account status — two things you already know, so no one needs to be called to find out.

Why an airline would tie the opening to the fare, we do not say — because it does not. What can be observed is the effect: whoever pays more checks in earlier and therefore chooses from a fuller cabin, while the cheapest fare arrives when most seats are already taken. The window is not an administrative detail, it is part of what you bought.

Bag drop closes 40 minutes before departure, which is exactly when the desks close.

And here is the part that costs the flight: past that time no baggage is accepted and no boarding pass is issued. These are not two deadlines of which one is forgiving — it is the same door.

The bag drop has its own airport exceptions, and they are not the ones above. Amsterdam stops at 60 minutes, Paris-Orly to a non-Schengen destination at 75.

Travelling with hand baggage only does not release you. The boarding pass is still issued at that same desk, so the 40 minutes apply to you even with nothing to check.

There is no late-check-in penalty. Vueling charges airport check-in as a service; lateness itself is not priced. What you risk is not a figure, it is a closed door.

A standard seat starts at 5 EUR online and through customer service, and at the airport it runs from 5 to 32 EUR.

Seats with more room — Space, Space Plus, Space One — run from 10 to 80 EUR online.

Most airlines send this price back to the booking flow and publish nothing. Here the range is written down, so you can decide before entering the funnel.

The comparison that matters is online against airport. The floor is the same, 5 EUR, but the ceiling rises at the desk: waiting saves nothing and narrows the choice.

And on a Fly Light fare, buying a seat does two things at once — it gives you the seat and moves your check-in forward by fourteen days. It is the only place on this page where spending money also buys time.

The bag that goes under the seat measures 40 x 30 x 20 cm and is included in every booking.

The overhead trolley measures 55 x 40 x 20 cm and weighs up to 10 kg — but it is included only on some fares. It is the variable, not the constant.

For the under-seat bag Vueling publishes no maximum weight. We say so because it is useful and because we will not turn a silence into a limit: we do not know whether one exists, we know it is not published.

Nothing is included in the hold by default. The weight depends on the fare or the option bought — 15, 20, 25 or 30 kg — with a per-kilo supplement beyond that and a ceiling of 32 kg per piece.

The hold size limit is 158 cm adding height, width and depth, with handle, wheels and pockets counted in. Wheels count, and they are usually what tips a case over the line.

A consequence when comparing two fares. Because nothing is included in the hold and the trolley depends on the fare, two similar prices can hide two very different baggage rights: the difference is not in the total, it is on the fare line.

The boarding pass can be printed or kept on the phone, as you prefer, and it can be downloaded and reprinted at any time after online check-in.

The app is not compulsory. Printing is explicitly offered; Vueling encourages the mobile format for environmental reasons but does not impose it.

Unlimited reprinting is more useful than it sounds. If the phone dies or the printout is lost, nothing has to be redone — you reopen the booking.

On flights to or from a non-Schengen country, presentation is earlier, with desks opening sooner and longer deadlines. The airline states the longer deadline without giving a reason, and we do not assign it one: the fact is certain, the motive would be our inference.

Desks open 2 hours before departure, and 2 hours 20 on non-Schengen flights — so arriving earlier than that achieves nothing.
