Air Europa Online Check-In and Boarding Pass: The Traveller's Guide
Before an Air Europa flight, everything hinges on two deadlines: when check-in opens and when it closes, both at the airport and online. This page brings together what you need to know about the Spanish carrier's check-in, the boarding pass, dropping off luggage, and the situations where the system won't let you finish. Since exact times vary by airport and destination, the time shown on your booking or confirmation email always takes precedence.
When Air Europa check-in opens and closes
For Air Europa flights, online check-in generally opens several hours before departure and closes a certain amount of time before takeoff, with a wider window on long-haul flights to Latin America than on domestic Spanish routes or European connections. According to the airline's public information, the usual window starts the day before or on the day itself: check the exact time shown on your booking, as that is the only one that applies to you.
At the airport, Air Europa counters close before departure, and the required margin is longer for long-haul flights or destinations subject to document checks. Allow the most cautious margin: once a flight is closed in the system, no agent can accept you, even if the plane is still at the gate.
A few benchmarks to help you plan:
| Step | What to aim for | |---|---| | Online check-in | As soon as it opens, so you don't depend on a connection on the day | | Arrival at the airport | The margin stated on your booking, extended for long-haul flights | | Baggage drop-off | Before the counter closes, which happens before boarding closes | | Boarding gate | Arrive at the time printed on your boarding pass
Checking in online or on the Air Europa app
Check-in is done through the "My Trips" area of aireuropa.com or through the airline's mobile app. To open your booking, Air Europa states that you need to enter the "Locator or ticket number" along with "The name of the passenger wishing to check in". The airline also specifies that "If this consists of 4 letters or fewer, the second surname must be added", a detail that explains many login failures among travellers with short surnames.
The locator is the six character alphanumeric code shown on your purchase confirmation. If your ticket was bought through an online travel agency, this code may differ from the agency's own reference: it is Air Europa's code that is required.
During the process, the airline offers seat selection or confirmation. Extra legroom seats and certain rows remain chargeable depending on the fare purchased. Passengers travelling with a leg cast should, according to Air Europa, obtain the seats needed to keep the leg elevated during the flight.
Online check-in is not open to every traveller profile. Requests for reduced mobility assistance must be made at least 48 hours before departure through the dedicated service, and certain medical situations require a certificate to be shown at check-in, as is the case for carrying syringes on board.
Getting and presenting your boarding pass
Once check-in is confirmed, Air Europa makes the boarding pass available in electronic form, to be kept in the app or the phone's digital wallet, and as a printable PDF. Both formats are accepted at security checkpoints and at the gate in the vast majority of airports served.
Some airports and destinations do not accept the mobile boarding pass, or require a counter visit for travel document checks: this is common on flights to the United States and to several Latin American countries, where a passport, visa or electronic authorisation must be verified by an agent before boarding. In this case, online check-in does not exempt you from visiting an Air Europa counter.
If you're travelling as a family or group under one booking, boarding passes are generated per passenger: check that you have all of them before leaving the screen, and verify the spelling of each name, which must match the ID document presented.
At the airport: counters, baggage and connections
Even if you've checked in online, you still need to go to baggage drop-off if you're travelling with hold luggage. Air Europa counters are located in the terminal shown on the day's screens: check the on-site display rather than relying on memory from a previous trip.
The baggage allowance depends on the fare purchased and the destination: the cheapest fares may include only carry-on luggage, with hold baggage sold separately. Buying baggage before arriving at the airport is generally cheaper than at the counter. Liquids in the cabin are limited by Air Europa to "a maximum of 10 containers of 100 ml (1 litre in total)", and blunt, pointed or sharp objects are banned from the cabin.
For itineraries with a stopover, the airline sets out detailed rules for checking baggage through to the final destination:
- If all flights are operated by Air Europa under the same booking and the same ticket, baggage goes directly through to the final destination, with no action needed on your part.
- If all flights are operated by Air Europa but under separate bookings or tickets, through-check-in is possible provided you inform staff at the check-in counters.
- Combining an Air Europa flight with another airline does not allow this direct routing.
- At Ezeiza, Guarulhos, Salvador de Bahía, Montevideo, Lima, Caracas, Cancún, Santiago de Chile, New York and Miami, you must collect your baggage at the first point of entry into the country and clear customs.
- Baggage is not transferred when the stopover requires changing airports, for example between Orly and Charles de Gaulle or between Ezeiza and Aeroparque.
- Through check-in to the final destination is not available if the booking includes a train or bus segment.
Check-in not working or unavailable: what to do
The most common error message comes down to a data entry issue: a mistyped locator, an incomplete surname when it consists of four letters or fewer, or a ticket issued by an agency whose reference isn't the airline's own. A booking may also stay untraceable until check-in has opened for your flight.
Other blocks are intentional and can only be resolved at the counter: a travel document check for destinations that require one, an unaccompanied minor, a passenger needing assistance or a medical certificate, travel with an animal, special baggage, or a flight operated by another airline whose check-in runs on its own system. If the flight number doesn't start with Air Europa's code, check-in is handled by the airline actually operating the flight: in that case, see the rules for Aerolíneas Argentinas or Aeroméxico, depending on the case.
If nothing works, don't let time run out: go to the Air Europa counter with the usual margin allowed for standard check-in, or contact the airline's customer service. If your flight has been changed or cancelled, check-in often stays closed until the booking has been reissued onto a new flight. iBoardingPass checks in on the traveller's behalf as soon as the airline's check-in opens and sends the boarding pass by email.
Frequently asked questions
How far in advance does Air Europa online check-in open?
The check-in window generally opens the day before or on the day of departure and closes before takeoff, with a longer lead time on long-haul flights than on European routes. Rely on the time shown on your Air Europa booking, and keep in mind that after that, only the airport counter can check you in.
What is the deadline for airport check-in?
Air Europa counters close before departure, earlier for long-haul flights and destinations with document checks than for domestic flights. Allow at least the margin stated on your booking, and more if you have baggage to drop off: once the flight is closed, boarding is refused.
What should I do if Air Europa says check-in isn't available?
First check the locator and the name entered: if your surname consists of four letters or fewer, the airline requires the second surname to be added. If the issue persists, it's often something handled at the counter, such as passport or visa checks, requested assistance, an animal, an unaccompanied minor, or a flight operated by another airline.
Do I still need to visit the counter if I've checked in online?
Yes, if you have hold baggage to drop off, or if your destination requires an agent to check your travel documents, which is common on flights to the United States and several Latin American countries. Without checked baggage or a document check, you can head straight to security with your boarding pass.
Will my baggage go through to my final destination if I have a stopover?
If all flights are operated by Air Europa under the same booking and the same ticket, baggage goes straight through to the final destination. On separate tickets, you need to ask at the check-in counter; at Ezeiza, Guarulhos, Salvador de Bahía, Montevideo, Lima, Caracas, Cancún, Santiago de Chile, New York and Miami, you must collect your baggage at the first point of entry into the country and clear customs.
Can I use a boarding pass on my phone?
The electronic Air Europa boarding pass appears in the app or in the phone's digital wallet, and a printable version is also available. However, some airports and destinations do not accept the mobile format and require a counter visit instead.
