Iberia check-in and boarding pass: times and rules
With Iberia, check-in needs planning ahead, and the boarding pass stops being issued well before takeoff. This page brings together the known opening and closing times, the documents required at the check, the baggage drop-off step and the situations that still require a counter visit. The rules described apply to Iberia Group flights (Iberia, Iberia Express and Air Nostrum), with variations depending on the airport, fare and destination.

When does Iberia online check-in open?
The opening time depends on the flight, and this is the main source of confusion for travellers. On domestic routes and within the Schengen area, the boarding pass is generally available noticeably earlier than on a flight leaving Schengen, where you often have to wait until the day before departure. The opening time that applies to your flight is shown in your booking: that's the reference to go by.
If your fare doesn't include seat selection, you can still book a seat in advance before getting your boarding pass, or wait for check-in to open. This is the timeframe behind searches like "how far ahead does Iberia check-in open".
Counter baggage check-in, meanwhile, opens 2 hours before departure on short and medium-haul flights departing from airports other than Madrid. Counter opening hours vary from one airport to another, especially at smaller airports where they only open for a few hours a day.
Deadline: how late can you check in
There are two deadlines not to confuse: the online check-in closing time and the counter deadline.
At the counter, the standard check-in deadline is 45 minutes before departure. It can be longer on long-haul flights and at certain airports: at some airports on the network, particularly for security reasons, the required deadlines are longer than standard. The exact time is shown on your booking, and when in doubt it's best to go by the earliest one.
Online, access to the boarding pass closes before the counter deadline. Plan to check in the day before rather than on the morning of the flight: once the online window has closed, only the counter can still issue the boarding pass, within its own opening hours.
Boarding itself closes a few minutes before the flight departs. Getting your boarding pass in time doesn't mean you can skip being at the gate on time: past that point, your seat may be reassigned.
Boarding pass: mobile, paper, app
Once check-in is confirmed, the Iberia boarding pass is available as a mobile pass or a PDF to print. The Iberia app (iOS and Android) lets you keep it on your phone, but it isn't required: the airline's website works just as well from a connected computer or tablet.
A few points that trip travellers up:
- On a connecting flight, make sure you have a boarding pass for each segment. A leg operated by another airline may only be checkable through that airline.
- Some airports don't offer online check-in: the boarding pass is then collected on site.
- Depending on the country of departure, a counter visit may still be required before the security check, even if you've already checked in online. Applicable cases are flagged during check-in.
Your details must match your travel document: first name, last name and ID number. A typo made when booking will cause issues at the check.
Documents, baggage and getting through the airport
At check-in as well as at the check, Iberia requires a valid identity document: identity card and/or passport for countries of origin or destination belonging to the EU and Schengen; passport and visas for other destinations and origins. To enter Spain from a country outside Schengen, the passport must be valid 60 minutes before departure. Some destinations also require passenger data to be submitted before the flight (API): these fields are requested during check-in and hold up the boarding pass until they're completed.
On the baggage side, online check-in doesn't remove the need to visit baggage drop-off. At Madrid's T4S terminal, bags must be dropped off no later than 55 minutes before departure; elsewhere, go by the counter check-in deadline, which is often the same cut-off.
The checked baggage allowance depends on the fare purchased and your Iberia Club level: the most basic fares travel without checked baggage, and adding a bag at the airport usually costs more than before departure. Check the number of pieces and the weight allowed on your booking, as well as the cabin bag dimensions, which may be checked at the gate on busy short-haul flights.
Finally, allow enough time to get to the airport for baggage drop-off, document checks and security, which take longer at peak times.
Check-in not available: what to do
The "check-in not available" message almost always has an identifiable cause.
| Situation | What happens |
|---|---|
| Check-in not yet open for this flight | Check-in isn't accessible yet |
| Ticket issued by another airline or codeshare flight | Check-in must be done on the operating carrier's website |
| Departure country requiring a counter check | Counter visit needed before the security check |
| Unaccompanied minor, assistance, cabin pet, special baggage | Handled at the counter |
| Airport without online check-in | Boarding pass collected on site |
| Incomplete passenger data (passport, visa, API) | The process stops until the fields are filled in |
If the boarding pass doesn't appear even though the flight is eligible, go back to your booking using the exact booking reference and name as shown on the ticket, then contact Iberia customer service if the issue persists. In case of a delayed or changed flight, a new check-in may be needed after rebooking.
Other airlines apply different rules, sometimes on the same route: see Air Europa online check-in, Aer Lingus rules within the IAG group, American Airlines check-in, Cathay Pacific's process among oneworld partners, or Alaska Airlines' procedures. Travellers who would rather not track the opening of check-in themselves can have iBoardingPass handle it, as it checks in as soon as it opens and sends the boarding pass by email.
Frequently asked questions
How far in advance does Iberia online check-in open?
It depends on the flight: on domestic and intra-Schengen routes, the boarding pass becomes available much earlier than on a flight leaving the Schengen area, where you usually have to wait until the day before departure. The opening time that applies to your flight is shown in your booking.
Until what time can you check in online?
Online check-in closes before the counter deadline, and the exact time varies depending on the departure airport. It's best to check in the day before: once online check-in has closed, you'll need to go to the counter.
What is the counter check-in deadline with Iberia?
The standard deadline is 45 minutes before departure. At some airports on the network, longer deadlines apply, particularly for security reasons. Check the exact time shown on your booking.
Why can't I check in online with Iberia?
The most common reasons: check-in isn't open yet for that flight, the flight is operated by another airline, the departure airport doesn't offer online check-in, or passenger data (passport, visa, API) is missing. Some cases, such as unaccompanied minors or assistance requests, are handled at the counter.
Do I still need to go to the counter after checking in online?
Yes, if you have a bag to check in. Depending on the country of departure, a counter check before security may also still be required, even if you already have a boarding pass.
What documents are checked at check-in?
Iberia requires a valid identity document: identity card and/or passport for countries of origin or destination belonging to the EU and Schengen; passport and visas for other destinations and origins. To enter Spain from a country outside Schengen, the passport must be valid 60 minutes before departure.
What time should bags be dropped off in Madrid?
At Madrid's T4S terminal, bags must be dropped off no later than 55 minutes before departure. At other airports, follow the counter check-in deadline shown on your booking.
What time does the baggage check-in counter open?
On short and medium-haul flights departing from airports other than Madrid, baggage check-in opens 2 hours before departure. Actual counter hours depend on the airport.
Does Iberia Express follow the same check-in rules?
Iberia Express is part of the Iberia Group, along with Air Nostrum: check-in for these flights follows the same channels. Baggage conditions, however, depend on the fare purchased.
