Jet2 check in: 28 days ahead, and the booking that cancels itself if you miss it

Most airlines sell you a way out of a missed check-in. Jet2 does not: a passenger who has not checked in by the time the window shuts has the reservation cancelled, with no refund. There is no late check-in product, no airport check-in fee, and no penalty to pay, because there is nothing left to pay for.

The same logic governs boarding. Jet2's conditions require you to present yourself at the correct gate by the time it states, and failing to do so carries the same consequence as missing check-in.

That single rule reorders everything else on this page. The check-in window is unusually long precisely because there is no safety net at the end of it, and the sensible habit with Jet2 is to check in the day the window opens rather than the day before you fly.

Opening. Online check-in opens 28 days before departure, on the condition that you have already chosen your seats and hold a valid passport recorded against the booking. Jet2 recommends checking in as soon as it opens, which in its own words is about seat choice as much as paperwork.

Closing. The window shuts 6 hours before departure, and 4 hours before on certain routes that Jet2 does not name. Treat 6 hours as the outer edge of your plan, since you will not know in advance which rule applies to your flight.

Bag drop. Hold luggage must be with the airline 40 minutes before departure; the desk follows the same clock as check-in rather than keeping its own.

At the airport. Present yourself at the desk no later than the minimum time shown on your itinerary, or 2 hours before departure where that comes first, since the figure varies by airport. Desks close 40 minutes before the flight.

Two conditions have to be satisfied before the online window will open for you, and both catch people out.

1. Seats already selected. Jet2 states that online check-in applies to passengers who have pre-selected their seats. Reserved seats are a paid product, whether at the front, at the back, by a window or on the aisle, or with extra space.
2. A valid passport on the booking. Upload the passport details through Manage My Booking before the window opens; Jet2 asks for this in advance precisely to speed the process up.
3. Names that match. The names on the reservation must be identical to those in the passports. Correcting one later carries a fee.
4. Advance Passenger Information where required. On many routes this data is compulsory, and boarding is refused without it.

Once those are in place, checking in is free, and so is the boarding pass, which you either download to the phone or print. Neither format is imposed and the app is not required.

The same procedure applies from every Jet2 base. The airline flies from 14 UK departure airports, Belfast, Birmingham, Bournemouth, Bristol, East Midlands, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds Bradford, Liverpool, London Gatwick, London Luton, London Stansted, Manchester and Newcastle, to more than 75 destinations, and nothing in the check-in rules changes between them.

None of this costs anything. Online check-in is free, the boarding pass is free, and no reissue fee is published for either format, which is worth knowing given how much of the rest of a Jet2 booking is priced only inside the booking path.

Jet2 runs a free evening service for flights leaving before midday: hand over your hold luggage between 16:30 and 21:00 the day before, then arrive next morning with hand luggage only. One member of the party can bring the bags for everyone, and online check-in has to be finished before you come.

One caution before you plan around it. Jet2's own pages disagree on where the service runs: one says seven of its airports, another lists twelve by name. Until that is resolved, check the Twilight Check-in page for your specific airport rather than assuming it is offered.

The combination of a 28-day window and an evening bag drop makes Jet2 the airline where the airport day itself can be shortest, provided you did the paperwork weeks earlier. It also means the morning routine has no slack in it: with the bags already gone, there is nothing to sort out at the airport if something is wrong with your booking.

Jet2 asks for the passports of everyone travelling when the bags are dropped, exactly as it would on the day, so the person carrying the suitcases carries the documents too.

Cabin. One bag of 56 x 45 x 25 cm weighing up to 10 kg, plus one personal item of 40 x 30 x 20 cm, which can be a handbag, a laptop bag or an airport purchase. Exceed either the size or the weight and additional fees apply, or the bag goes into the hold. A paid option, Guaranteed Cabin Luggage, secures a place in the cabin for the bag rather than the hold.

Hold. Luggage is sold by the piece, each of 22 kg. Jet2 publishes no prices outside the booking path, but it does publish the saving: adding a bag before you reach the airport is up to 50% cheaper than buying it there. Excess weight is charged per kilo at a rate quoted when you pay, at the departure airport, which is one of the few charges Jet2 leaves entirely undisclosed until the moment it applies.

Once checked in, the boarding pass is downloaded to the phone or printed, entirely as the passenger prefers. Jet2 imposes neither format and does not require its app.

Given that a missed check-in cancels the booking, the safe routine is to complete check-in early, save the pass offline and keep a printed copy for anyone in the party whose phone you would not want to depend on. There is no published fee for reissuing a pass.

If you use Twilight Check-in, the online step has to be finished before you turn up with the bags, so treat the evening drop as the second half of a job you started at home.

A valid passport is not merely required for travel with Jet2, it is required to check in at all, which is why the passport step sits before the window rather than after it.

The name on the booking must match the passport exactly. A discrepancy found late is corrected for a fee, and it is the kind of error that surfaces at the desk on the morning of a flight rather than at home.
