Eurowings Online Check-in: Deadlines and Boarding Pass

With Eurowings, checking in online or through the app gets you an electronic boarding pass that you present along with a valid travel document. Opening and closing times depend on your departure airport, and your fare type (BASIC, SMART, BIZclass) determines whether airport check-in is included or charged separately. This page brings together the deadlines, the steps involved, and the points travellers most often get stuck on.

When Eurowings check-in opens and closes

Online and mobile check-in opens 72 hours before departure. According to the airline's public information, it generally remains possible until a few hours before departure, with a later closing time at most departure airports in Germany: 40 minutes before departure.

These times vary depending on the departure airport. Check the exact time shown on your booking or on the airline's official website, and treat the earliest cutoff as the one that applies to you.

Please note: booking changes, name changes and later add-on purchases (baggage, for example) are only possible on the website as long as online and mobile check-in for your departure airport hasn't closed yet.

Checking in online or through the Eurowings app

On the website, you open the Check-in section, then sign in with your myEurowings account or with your booking reference along with the name of the person who made the booking. You then select the travellers, baggage and seats.

In the app (iOS and Android), you find your booking through the "My Trips" menu, using the booking reference from your travel documents and the surname under which the booking was made. Before checking in, you can choose a seat if you haven't already and fill in your contact details. Accepting the dangerous goods notice comes right before your boarding pass is issued.

Check-in applies to everyone included on the booking. For group bookings, Eurowings recommends using the website rather than the app.

Your Eurowings boarding pass

Once check-in is confirmed, your boarding pass appears with all the relevant information, plus a QR code or barcode. Eurowings lets you keep it in several ways:

  • as a PDF sent by email;
  • in your phone's Wallet or Passbook;
  • in the Eurowings app;
  • printed out.

Having a digital boarding pass doesn't exempt you from document checks: a valid travel document is required; depending on the destination, an identity card or a passport must be presented; a driving licence is not sufficient. For certain destinations, airlines are legally required to record additional personal data and forward it to the relevant national authorities through the Advance Passenger Information System (APIS).

Airport check-in and fees by fare

Airport check-in is included for SMART and BIZclass passengers. With a BASIC ticket, a fee applies: €5 per person if the airport check-in option is selected at the time of booking, and €20 per person if the decision is made once you're at the airport.

Priority check-in, which gives access to priority desks, is added to the booking; it's included for BIZclass tickets as well as for HON Circle members and Senator or Frequent Traveller status holders, and is only available at airports offering BIZclass.

Eurowings recommends allowing enough time for check-in and security checks, plus an extra half hour to get from the counter to the boarding gate, especially during busy periods.

Baggage: drop-off, kiosks and the day before your flight

Checking in online doesn't replace dropping off checked baggage, which is done at self-service kiosks or at the counter. If airport check-in isn't included in your fare (BASIC, for example), the airline recommends checking in online before dropping off your bag: at the counter, the €20 per person fee applies.

At a number of German airports (Berlin, Cologne Bonn, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Stuttgart, Hanover), early baggage drop-off is possible the day before the flight, between 6 pm and 8 pm (times vary depending on the airport), free at self-service kiosks or for 10 € (or 5 € depending on the airport) at the airline counter, for flights departing early the following morning within time slots specific to each airport. It's free at the kiosks and the counter for BIZclass ticket holders, HON Circle members (and their companion), and passengers with Senator status.

At the airline's counter, drop-off the day before is only available for certain destinations (Egypt, Albania, Armenia, Georgia, Israel, Morocco, Montenegro, Tunisia, Turkey, United Arab Emirates). It isn't available for Beirut, Jeddah, Pristina and Erbil, nor for flights whose final destination is the United States or Canada. Weapons used for sporting activities can't be dropped off the day before.

If online check-in isn't working

Technical issues can sometimes prevent bookings made through a tour operator (TUI, Alltours, Schauinsland, for example) from being accessed. For seat selection or adding other services (baggage, boarding and disembarkation assistance), Eurowings points travellers to its call centre, whose number appears on the airline's official website.

If you get an error message while checking in, the airline asks you to take a screenshot and show it at the check-in counter at the airport before departure.

If your trip continues with another carrier, the rules differ from one airline to another: see Austrian Airlines check-in, Brussels Airlines rules, Discover Airlines check-in, Edelweiss procedures or Condor's boarding pass.
