easyJet Check-in: Deadlines, Boarding Pass and Airport Rules
With easyJet, check-in is done online or through the app, never at the counter by default, and the window opens 30 days before departure before closing 2 hours before departure. Between these two points sit several deadlines that travellers often discover too late: the passenger details you need to fill in, bag drop closing well before the flight, and the gate shutting 30 minutes before departure. This page brings together these rules exactly as the airline publishes them, with airport-by-airport times and the edge cases that tend to eat up time.

When easyJet check-in opens and closes
easyJet opens online check-in 30 days before departure and closes it 2 hours before departure. The window is generous, but the closing time is firm: once it passes, no boarding pass can be issued online, whether through the website or the app.
Four deadlines shape departure day, and they don't all fall at the same moment depending on the airport:
- Online check-in closing: 2 hours before departure.
- Bag drop closing: 40 minutes before departure.
- Boarding gate closing: 30 minutes before departure, at every airport.
- Adding or correcting passenger information (API): up to 2 hours before the scheduled departure time.
Go by the earliest of these four, not the latest. A traveller who arrives at the airport 50 minutes before their flight will still have a valid boarding pass, but will find the bag drop desk closed at most major airports, and only 20 minutes to reach the gate.
In practice, there's no need to wait until the last minute. easyJet even recommends checking in early when several people are travelling together, because seat allocation depends on what's still available at the time you check in.
How to check in online, step by step
The airline offers two routes, the website and the mobile app, with the same outcome. According to its help page, online check-in is quick and can be done on the website or in the mobile app, using the booking reference or from the manage booking area.
- Open the check-in page on easyjet.com, or the relevant tab in the easyJet app.
- Identify yourself, either with the six-character booking reference and the lead passenger's surname, or by logging into your easyJet account, which saves you from re-entering the reference.
- Select the passengers to check in. A family booking can be processed in one go, but each passenger needs to be ticked.
- Confirm your contact details. easyJet uses these to reach you in case of schedule changes, and confirming this information is part of the check-in process.
- Fill in the passenger information requested for the route concerned, covered in the next section.
- Get the boarding pass for each passenger, for every flight on the booking, including the return.
Logging into an easyJet account is the most convenient option if you fly often, since bookings and boarding passes stay accessible there. The booking reference alone is enough on its own, though, even for a ticket bought by someone else or by a travel agency, as long as the surname is entered exactly as it appears on the booking.
Passenger information (API) to prepare before checking in
On part of the network, check-in isn't complete without what's known as API data, for Advance Passenger Information. easyJet explains it this way: on certain routes, all airlines are required to send local authorities information about their passengers before travel.
The fields requested are as follows:
- Full name, as it appears on the passport or identity card.
- Date of birth.
- Nationality.
- Passport or identity card number.
- Document expiry date.
- Country that issued the document.
- Gender, where required by the local authority.
This information can be added up to 2 hours before the scheduled departure time, but the airline recommends doing it as early as possible. Two details cause trouble on departure day: the data entered must match the document you'll actually be carrying, and any change must be updated on the booking. A passport renewed between booking and travel therefore needs updating, otherwise the check at departure will block you.
Once check-in is confirmed, corrections go through the easyJet app or customer service, and only before check-in closes for the first flight on the booking.
Boarding pass: app, printing and rejected formats
easyJet treats its app as the main format: the best way to keep your boarding passes is the free easyJet mobile app, with printing still an option. The pass stays available offline there, so you're not dependent on the network in a crowded terminal.
One point is worth reading twice, because it catches out a lot of travellers at security: a boarding pass saved as a PDF and displayed on a phone is not accepted, because airport security staff can't scan it. A PDF downloaded and then opened from the gallery or an email app is therefore not an accepted format on screen. Two formats work: the pass in the easyJet app, or the same pass printed on paper.
If you print, the airline asks that the pass be printed fully and legibly. A printout cut off on the right, a faded barcode or a sheet folded across the code is enough to stop a passenger at the gate. And if the pass is lost, there's no special procedure: you simply reissue it, as many times as needed.
A baby under two travelling on an adult's lap doesn't get a separate boarding pass: they're listed on the accompanying adult's pass.
When to print your easyJet boarding pass
The boarding pass exists as soon as check-in is confirmed, so potentially 30 days before departure. Nothing stops you printing it a month ahead and tucking it into your passport.
One precaution is still worth taking for very early printouts, though. Any change to the booking makes the pass out of date, and easyJet is explicit about this: after any change to the booking, such as adding a hold bag or changing flight, you need to check in again and print a new boarding pass. Adding a hold bag, changing seat, moving a flight: each of these means going through check-in again and printing a new pass.
The cautious approach is to print once the booking is settled, a few days before departure, and to also keep the pass in the app as a backup. Paper covers a phone running out of battery, the app covers forgetting the paper.
Bag drop: opening and closing times by airport
Online check-in doesn't remove the need to go through bag drop when you're travelling with a hold bag, and it's the first deadline at the airport, before the gate closes. easyJet publishes times that vary by departure airport: 40 minutes before departure.
| Departure airport | Bag drop opens | Bag drop closes | Gate closes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Belfast, Birmingham, Boa Vista, Bristol, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Glasgow, Gran Canaria, Egypt, Faro, Israel, Jordan, Liverpool, London Luton, Manchester, Newcastle, Morocco, Milan Malpensa, Sal, São Vicente, Tenerife South, Tunisia | 3 hrs before | 60 min before | 30 min before |
| Flights to Israel | 3 hrs before | 60 min before | 30 min before |
| Amsterdam, Antalya, Dalaman, Izmir, Larnaca, Lisbon, London Gatwick, Lyon, Milas Bodrum, Nice, Palma, Paphos | 2 hrs 30 before | 60 min before | 30 min before |
| Zurich, Edinburgh | 2 hrs 30 before | 50 min before | 30 min before |
| Geneva | 2 hrs before | 50 min before | 30 min before |
| Naples | 2 hrs 30 before | 40 min before | 30 min before |
| Pristina, Amsterdam (flights outside Europe) | 3 hrs before | 40 min before | 30 min before |
| All other flights | 2 hrs before | 40 min before | 30 min before |
Two useful takeaways from this table. First, French airports served by easyJet don't all follow the same rule: Paris Charles de Gaulle and Lyon close bag drop 60 minutes before departure, while Nantes, Toulouse, Bordeaux or Marseille fall under the "all other flights" line, meaning 40 minutes. Second, the opening time determines how early it's worth arriving: turning up three hours ahead in Geneva won't help, the desk isn't open yet.
These times also appear on your booking confirmation and on the flight itinerary, which apply to your specific departure.
At the airport: the timeline up to the gate
Once you have your boarding pass in hand, departure day follows the same sequence everywhere, only the timings change.
- Between 3 hrs and 2 hrs before departure, depending on the airport, bag drop desks open.
- Between 60 and 40 minutes before departure, depending on the airport, those same desks close.
- 30 minutes before departure, the boarding gate closes. easyJet states: "Gates close exactly 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time."
Between bag drop and the gate come security screening and, on flights outside the Schengen area, border control. These two steps are the least predictable part of the journey: they depend on how busy the terminal is, not on the airline.
A traveller with only cabin luggage could in theory arrive later, since there's no desk to go through. They're still bound by the same gate closing time, and by security queues that, at peak times, often run past half an hour.
Boarding order and priority boarding
easyJet boarding follows an order set out by the airline: first passengers who've booked special assistance and are at the gate, then Speedy Boarding customers, then families with children under 5, and finally the remaining passengers.
Speedy Boarding can't be bought on its own: it's reserved for easyJet Plus cardholders, Smart+ and Inclusive Plus fares, and passengers who've added a paid large cabin bag to their booking. A paid large cabin bag therefore gives access to the priority lane, something many travellers don't realise they're entitled to.
Boarding often happens through both doors of the aircraft, front and rear. Your boarding pass, or ground staff, will show you which one to use, and following that instruction saves everyone several minutes.
Being at the gate before boarding starts is the condition for benefiting from priority: priority isn't something you can catch up on later, it's decided the moment the queue forms.
Can you still check in at the airport?
easyJet builds its process around online check-in: it's the standard route, and the boarding pass is meant to be issued before reaching the terminal. No online check-in fee appears in the airline's help pages dedicated to check-in.
Ground staff are still there, though, and the airline explicitly points to them if something goes wrong: if the issue continues, ask ground staff for help when checking in at the airport. In practice, a passenger stuck with a technical problem isn't left without options, but they need to arrive early enough for the desk to still be open, which brings us back to the times in the table above.
The practical takeaway fits in one sentence: the airport is a backup, not a plan. Checking in the night before from home takes five minutes; an improvised check-in at the desk depends entirely on that day's queue.
Seats: what checking in really changes
With easyJet, you can choose your seat when booking or at any point before check-in, for a fee. Once you've checked in, that option is gone, which makes the check-in date a key moment for groups.
For families who haven't bought seats, the airline gives a specific figure: check-in opens 30 days before departure, and easyJet recommends checking in as early as possible, no later than 7 days before the flight. It also warns that waiting until the last minute might mean there aren't enough seats left to sit the family together.
Another rule worth knowing before paying: on a booking with several passengers, allocated seats need to be selected for everyone, it's not possible to book them for only part of the group.
The practical conclusion is straightforward. If sitting together matters, check in as soon as the window opens, 30 days before departure, and no later than a week before the flight.
Children, babies and family bookings
easyJet groups passengers into three age categories: babies from 14 days to 2 years, children from 2 to 15 years, and adults from 16 upwards. Infants under 14 days old cannot travel.
A baby under two travelling on an adult's lap doesn't get a separate boarding pass, which can be confusing when checking documents before leaving: a family of two adults and a baby will have two boarding passes, not three.
For children under 16, identity documents follow a specific rule on domestic flights, covered further down. And the boarding order gives priority to families with children under 5, right after Speedy Boarding customers.
The advice to check in early matters here too: it's the one thing you control to get children seated next to an adult without paying for allocated seats.
Special assistance: deadlines and meeting point
A request for assistance is made at the time of booking, from the manage booking area, or by phone through the dedicated team. The deadline the airline gives is clear: the request should be made as soon as possible and no later than 48 hours before travel.
On departure day, the arrival instruction is earlier than for other passengers: get to the assistance point or desk at least 2 hours before departure, up to 3 hours at some airports, depending on the bag drop opening times shown on your itinerary.
Online check-in remains available for passengers who've requested assistance. Two technical points are worth noting: adding assistance during the online process requires being logged into your easyJet account, and a booking made by a third party has to go through the dedicated team. After adding assistance, refresh the boarding pass so it shows the updated information.
Group bookings: the 5-day cut-off
From 10 passengers up to 99 seats, easyJet applies group booking rules. The deadline that shapes the whole booking falls 5 days before departure: names and API (Advance Passenger Information) details must be submitted no later than 5 days before the departure date.
Until that deadline, names can be changed free of charge. After it, changes become chargeable, and a booking still missing names 5 days before departure also moves onto name change fees.
For the organiser, this shifts the working schedule: collecting passports and exact spellings needs to be wrapped up a week before the flight, not the night before. Each participant can then manage their own online check-in, using the link sent with the confirmation.
Identity documents required at departure
easyJet's identity rules depend on the type of flight, and they don't always match what passengers expect.
On domestic flights, a photo ID is required. Accepted documents include a valid passport, an EU or Swiss national identity card, a driving licence or a military ID card. Children under 16 don't need to show ID on domestic flights, except in Italy.
On international flights, the airline is stricter: "All customers travelling on international flights must have a valid EU/EEA/Swiss identity card or passport and, where applicable, a valid visa." And the document must be physical: "You must bring the physical identity card or passport with you when travelling abroad; digital versions or apps may not be accepted."
An identity card stored in a digital wallet app doesn't replace the actual document, then. This is separate from the boarding pass, which is perfectly valid within the easyJet app.
When online check-in doesn't work
A failed check-in rarely has a mysterious cause. Before assuming it's a system fault, seven checks cover most cases:
- Is the window open? Before 30 days before departure or after 2 hours before departure, the system simply refuses the request.
- Does the name entered match the booking exactly, accents and hyphens included?
- Is the booking reference correct? It's six characters long and appears on the confirmation, not on a payment receipt.
- Is the passenger information complete for every traveller on the booking?
- Do the identity details match the document you'll actually be carrying, especially after a renewal?
- Has a recent booking change been finalised and paid for?
- Has the flight been changed by the airline, which sometimes means starting again from the new booking?
In case of a technical glitch, easyJet gives its own guidance: if there's a technical issue during check-in, don't give up, try again later. If the problem persists, ground staff at departure remain an option, as long as you arrive before the desk closes.
For a booking made through an agency or a third party, certain actions have to go through whoever holds the booking, which explains check-in refusals that otherwise seem baffling.
Changing your booking after checking in
A confirmed check-in doesn't lock the booking, but it does change how changes are handled. Corrections then go through the easyJet app or customer service, and need to happen before check-in closes for the first flight on the booking.
Whenever a change affects the flight or the luggage, the same reflex applies: check in again and reissue the boarding pass. A boarding pass issued before a hold bag was added no longer reflects the booking, and that's the kind of detail that's hard to sort out at a desk 45 minutes before departure.
Spelling corrections and title changes are free according to the airline, which means a typo can be fixed without reopening the whole booking. Other changes follow easyJet's standard fee scale.
Having iBoardingPass check you in
iBoardingPass is an independent service, with no business ties to easyJet, that handles check-in on your behalf and sends you the boarding pass as soon as it's available. The idea addresses a real problem: the check-in window closes 2 hours before departure, often during a journey, a meeting or an overnight time-zone shift.
You provide the booking reference and passenger name, the service watches for check-in to open for your flight, completes the process and sends the boarding pass to your inbox. You keep the option of checking in yourself, and you remain solely responsible for your identity documents and the accuracy of the passenger information you provide.
The service is useful for travellers juggling multiple flights, for larger families whose seating depends on check-in timing, and for last-minute business trips. It doesn't cover bag drop or reaching the gate, which remain your responsibility on departure day. Discover the service.
Frequently asked questions
How far in advance can you check in for an easyJet flight?
Online check-in opens 30 days before departure and closes 2 hours before departure. Between these two points, you can check in at any time via easyjet.com or the app. For bookings with several passengers, the airline advises not to wait beyond 7 days before the flight if you want to sit together without buying allocated seats.
What time does easyJet online check-in close?
Check-in closes 2 hours before departure. A flight scheduled for 6:40pm will therefore have online check-in closing at 4:40pm. This deadline is separate from bag drop closing, which happens later, between 60 and 40 minutes before departure depending on the airport, and from gate closing, set at 30 minutes before departure.
Is easyJet online check-in free?
No online check-in fee appears anywhere in easyJet's help pages dedicated to check-in, whether you use the website or the app. Any extra charges you might come across at the same stage relate to other services, such as choosing an allocated seat or adding a hold bag.
Is online check-in compulsory with easyJet?
It's the airline's standard route: the boarding pass is obtained online or in the app before reaching the airport. If you run into trouble, easyJet points passengers towards ground staff at bag drop, but you then need to arrive before the desk closes, which happens between 60 and 40 minutes before departure depending on the airport.
Can you check in with just the booking reference?
Yes. The six-character booking reference and the passenger's surname are enough, no easyJet account required. This is the route to use when someone else, or a travel agency, bought the ticket. The name must be entered exactly as it appears on the booking.
When can you print an easyJet boarding pass?
As soon as check-in is confirmed, so at the earliest 30 days before departure. If the booking changes afterwards, for example a hold bag is added or the flight is changed, you need to check in again and print a new boarding pass: the old one is no longer valid.
Can you show an easyJet boarding pass as a PDF on your phone?
No. easyJet states that a scanned PDF displayed on a phone cannot be read by airport security staff. Two formats are accepted: the boarding pass in the easyJet app, or the boarding pass printed on paper, fully and clearly legible.
What should you do if online check-in isn't working?
First check the check-in window, the exact spelling of the name, the booking reference and the passenger information for each traveller. easyJet then advises trying again later rather than giving up, and asking ground staff for help at bag drop if the problem persists.
Does a baby under two get a boarding pass?
No separate boarding pass when travelling on an adult's lap: the infant appears on the accompanying adult's boarding pass. Babies under 14 days old are not accepted on board.
What time does the boarding gate close with easyJet?
30 minutes before the scheduled departure time, at every airport served. This is the strictest deadline of departure day: a valid boarding pass doesn't replace being at the gate before this cut-off.
Do you need to check in again after adding a hold bag?
Yes. Any change to the booking, whether it's an added bag or a changed flight, means you need to check in again and issue a new boarding pass. The pass issued before the change no longer matches the booking.
What identity documents are needed for an easyJet flight?
A photo ID for domestic flights, with under-16s exempt except in Italy. For international flights, a valid passport or national identity card from the EU, EEA or Switzerland, in physical form: a digital version may be refused.
Does bag drop close at the same time as online check-in?
No, and this is a common mix-up. Bag drop closes 40 minutes before departure, while online check-in closes 2 hours before departure. A passenger can therefore have a valid boarding pass and still find the bag drop desk closed.
