When Discover Airlines check-in opens and closes

Discover Airlines online check-in generally opens 30 hours before departure, according to the airline's published information. It remains available up to a cut-off before takeoff: plan to have it done the night before or that same morning, rather than waiting until you're on your way to the airport.

At the airport, times differ from one hub to another:

AirportOpensCloses
Munich (Terminal 2, level 4)30 hours before departure60 minutes before departure
Frankfurt (Terminal 1, Halls A and B)Counters usually open 3 hours before departure60 minutes before departure

At destination airports, counters may close earlier. The exact time is shown on your booking or on your flight confirmation, and that's the one that counts.

Online, at the kiosks, or at the counter

Several routes lead to the same Discover Airlines boarding pass.

  • The airline's website: enter your booking reference and the passenger's name, or log in to your Miles & More account.
  • Self-service kiosks: at Frankfurt, self-service check-in and luggage drop kiosks are available in Hall A and Hall B. At Munich, you can check in at any Lufthansa check-in kiosk, on level 4 of Terminal 2.
  • Counters: at Frankfurt, Economy Class passengers have extra counters in Terminal 1 (Hall B), zone 14, at counters 441 to 444. Priority check-in is located in Terminal 1 (Hall A), zone 11, at counters 121 to 122.

At Munich, Discover Airlines counters are the Lufthansa counters that also carry the Discover Airlines name: don't look for a separate sign. Because of ongoing modernisation works at Frankfurt Airport, passengers there check in at different zones depending on their travel class.

Your boarding pass: format, seating, special cases

After online check-in, the boarding pass is available as a mobile pass or as a PDF to print. At the airport kiosks, it's printed on paper, and that's the one you scan afterwards at luggage drop-off.

Discover Airlines sells advance seat selection as an add-on: if you're travelling as a group and want to sit together, look into this option when booking rather than at the last minute.

Some situations still go through an agent, as is standard practice at most airlines: infant on lap, pet in the cabin, special assistance, bulky sports equipment, or a flight with a leg operated by another airline. In these cases, go to the counter with plenty of time to spare.

For destinations requiring travel authorisation, passport details and the relevant authorisation (ESTA, AVE or visa depending on the country) are generally requested before the boarding pass is issued. Have the document to hand when you check in.

Luggage: drop-off, the night before, and family check-in

Online check-in doesn't remove the need to go through checked-luggage drop-off. At Frankfurt, you can scan your boarding pass at one of the kiosks in Hall A or Hall B, then attach the luggage tag to the long side of your bag. At Munich, any Lufthansa check-in kiosk can be used for luggage drop-off.

Early drop-off is possible at both Frankfurt and Munich: late evening check-in is open the night before the flight, from 5pm to 8pm, and no earlier than 23 hours before departure. This is useful for an early morning departure or to free up your day.

For families, as an adult family member traveling, you can also check in luggage for other family members, to do this, you will need the travel documents as well as the official identification of the people concerned.

Cabin and checked luggage allowances depend on the fare purchased and the destination: check the 'baggage' line on your confirmation before you travel.

Common issues and what exists elsewhere in the group

Booking reference rejected: it sometimes happens that the booking was issued by a tour operator or travel agency, with a reference different from the one on the ticket. In that case, use the code shown on the airline's document, or your ticket number.

Online check-in unavailable: this is common on itineraries combining several airlines, on group bookings, and on tickets changed at the last minute. The counter then takes over, which is why it's worth arriving early.

Late arrival: once check-in has closed, the airline is not required to accept you, even with a boarding pass already issued; rerouting follows your fare conditions. At both Frankfurt and Munich, check-in closes 60 minutes before departure, and queues can be long during peak season.

Rules vary from one airline to another, even within the same group: see the procedures for Austrian Airlines, those for Brussels Airlines, and, in the German leisure market, the Condor check-in process. Online check-in can also be handled on your behalf by iBoardingPass, which then sends the boarding pass by email.
