Garuda Indonesia: Online Check-In and Boarding Pass

Garuda Indonesia, a SkyTeam member, offers online check-in from its website and mobile app, alongside airport counters and self-service kiosks. Opening times, how you receive your boarding pass, and baggage handling all vary depending on the departure airport and whether the flight is domestic within Indonesia or international. This page brings together the key points to know before a GA flight, from check-in opening to the security checkpoint.

When Garuda Indonesia check-in opens and closes

Garuda Indonesia online check-in opens a set number of hours before departure and closes several hours before takeoff, though the exact window is not the same everywhere. The precise timing depends on the departure airport and the type of flight, so check the time shown on your booking or your GA itinerary.

At the airport, counters close well before the boarding gate, and the cut-off time differs from one station to another. Allow plenty of time: once the counter has closed, the booking can no longer be changed and the flight is lost.

Checking in ahead of time does not exempt you from being at the departure gate by the time printed on your boarding pass, since the gate closes before the scheduled departure.

Checking in online or through the Garuda app

Online check-in is done through the Online Check-In section of garuda-indonesia.com or through the Garuda Indonesia mobile app. You will generally need your booking reference (a 6-character reservation code) or your e-ticket number, plus the passenger's surname exactly as it appears on the booking.

During the process, the airline offers seat selection subject to availability and travel class. GarudaMiles members can retrieve their saved preferences by signing in to their account before checking in.

Certain traveler profiles generally cannot be processed online and must go to the counter: passengers travelling with an infant on their lap, those requiring special assistance, unaccompanied minors, animals in the cabin, oversized or special baggage, tickets with an issue, and flights operated by a partner airline. On a codeshare itinerary, the rules of the airline actually operating the flight apply.

Boarding pass: format, delivery and printing

Once checked in, Garuda Indonesia provides a boarding pass delivery step: an electronic version sent by email or shown in the app, complete with barcode, or a printed copy from the airport. The document shows the passenger's name, flight number, terminal, gate and boarding cut-off time.

A mobile boarding pass is not accepted at every airport, and some stations still require a stop at the counter. If in doubt, head to the Garuda counters or the terminal's self-service kiosks to get a printed boarding pass.

On a multi-segment itinerary, check on the document how many flights are actually covered before leaving the counter.

Baggage, documents and going through the airport

Being checked in does not replace dropping off checked baggage. Passengers with checked bags must go to the Garuda Indonesia counters or, where available, dedicated baggage drop counters, before the baggage cut-off time at the relevant airport.

Garuda Indonesia's baggage allowances vary by class, fare, route and GarudaMiles status: check the details on your ticket, since long-haul and domestic flights follow different rules. For international flights, travel documents (passport and, where required, visa or entry authorization for the destination country) are checked at the airport: a successful online check-in does not validate these documents.

The same questions come up with other SkyTeam carriers, each with its own procedures: see Air France's check-in process, check-in with Delta Air Lines, China Airlines' rules, or Bangkok Airways' procedure across its Southeast Asian regional network.

When check-in doesn't work

Several common causes explain why Garuda Indonesia online check-in might reject a passenger: check-in not yet open, the window already closed, a name entered differently from the one on the ticket, a ticket not yet issued by the travel agency, or a flight changed following a schedule irregularity. In these cases, the booking needs to be handled directly by the airline.

What to do:

  • check the booking reference and the exact spelling of the name in the My Trip section;
  • try again through the app if the website is not working, and vice versa;
  • contact the Garuda Indonesia call center or one of the airline's offices if the ticket does not appear;
  • go to the counter with plenty of time to spare, as the issue is usually resolved on site.

If you miss the cut-off time, it is no longer possible to obtain a boarding pass: you will need to speak with Garuda staff about rebooking, subject to your fare conditions and seat availability. Online check-in can also be handled by iBoardingPass, which completes it on the traveler's behalf as soon as it opens and sends the boarding pass by email.

Frequently asked questions

When does Garuda Indonesia online check-in open?

The online check-in window opens before departure on the airline's website or app, with timing that can differ by route and for flights operated by a partner airline. The exact time is shown on your booking.

What do I need to check in for a GA flight?

The 6-character booking reference or e-ticket number, along with the passenger's surname as written on the ticket. For an international flight, your passport and any required visas are checked at the airport.

Is a mobile boarding pass accepted by Garuda Indonesia?

The airline issues an electronic boarding pass, but it is not accepted at every airport. Plan to stop at a counter or self-service kiosk if you are unsure about your departure station.

Do I still need to go to the counter after checking in online?

Yes, if you have checked baggage, need a paper boarding pass, or fall into a category handled at the counter (infant on lap, special assistance, animal in cabin, unaccompanied minor, special baggage).

What time does airport check-in close?

Counters close before the scheduled departure time, with a cut-off that depends on the airport and whether the flight is domestic or international. Check the time shown on your booking and arrive with plenty of margin, since boarding is no longer possible once the counter has closed.

Can I choose my seat during check-in?

Seat selection is offered during online check-in, subject to remaining availability and your travel class and fare. Some seats are held back for airport processing.

Can I check in online for any codeshare flight?

Not always. When the flight is operated by another airline, check-in is generally handled by the carrier actually operating the flight, following its own schedule and rules.
