Qatar Airways check-in and boarding pass

Qatar Airways opens check-in ahead of departure, on its website, in its app and at airport counters. Depending on your departure airport and destination, the closing time, baggage drop and document checks don't always follow the same schedule. This page brings together what you need to know to get your boarding pass in time and avoid surprises at the counter.

When Qatar Airways check-in opens and closes

On Qatar Airways flights, online check-in opens several hours before the scheduled departure time and closes before takeoff. Certain routes, subject to stricter regulatory checks, may follow different windows: the exact time shown on your booking is what counts.

At the airport, counters open several hours before departure on a long-haul flight and close before takeoff, with the exact timing depending on the stopover. Plan to be at the counter well ahead of this deadline: once check-in has closed, the airline is no longer required to accept you on the flight, even if the aircraft is still at the gate.

Regional flights out of Doha, departures from busy airports, and flights operated by a partner carrier may follow different schedules. Go by the earliest time shown on your ticket rather than a general rule of thumb.

Online check-in, the app and self-service kiosks

Online check-in is done through the Manage My Booking section of the Qatar Airways website, using your booking reference (a six-character code) and the passenger's name, or a ticket number. The Qatar Airways mobile app allows the same process and stores the boarding pass on your phone.

The app isn't required: a printed boarding pass is still accepted, and some airports still require one for flights to specific destinations. At counters and in several transit hubs, self-service kiosks also let you print your boarding pass and bag tags.

A few bookings fall outside the online process and must be handled at the counter:

  • unaccompanied minors and passengers needing special assistance;
  • travellers with a pet in the cabin or in the hold;
  • tickets issued by a third party where the booking was changed after issuance;
  • itineraries including a flight operated by another airline that doesn't share check-in with Qatar Airways.

On a oneworld ticket combining several carriers, check-in is sometimes handled by the carrier operating the first segment. Rules differ from one airline to another: see for example the procedures at Finnair, those at Iberia, or the process followed by Cathay Pacific.

Boarding pass, documents and seat

Once check-in is confirmed, the boarding pass is available on mobile, as a PDF, or for printing. It shows the flight number, expected gate, boarding time and your seat. The gate can change after the pass is issued: the airport screens remain the reference.

Passports, visas and, depending on the destination, electronic travel authorisations are checked either during online check-in or at the counter. If the system flags a document check, an agent must see the originals before boarding, even with a boarding pass already issued.

On seating, Qatar Airways assigns a standard seat at check-in based on availability, at no extra cost. So-called preferred seats, in a front row or with extra space, are chargeable on most Economy fares. Privilege Club members and Business passengers enjoy more flexible conditions. A seat booked in advance generally stays yours, but an aircraft change can lead to reassignment.

Baggage and getting through the airport

Checking in online doesn't remove the need to visit baggage drop when you're travelling with a checked bag. Qatar Airways uses Bag Drop counters at many airports: check the terminal shown on your booking on departure day.

The checked baggage allowance depends on cabin, fare and route, and is shown on your ticket. Cabin baggage is subject to a maximum number of pieces, weight and dimensions that vary by travel class and itinerary, also detailed on your ticket. Excess baggage is charged at the counter, at a higher rate than if purchased in advance.

In Doha, Hamad International Airport serves as a hub: for connecting passengers, the boarding pass for the second segment is often issued right from the first departure, but some stopovers require a further stop at the transfer counter.

Practices vary from one carrier to another, for example at Malaysia Airlines or American Airlines on codeshare segments.

Check-in stuck: what to do

Online check-in that won't go through is rarely due to a technical fault. The most common causes are well known:

  • the flight isn't open yet, or the online deadline has passed;
  • the name entered doesn't exactly match the passport name on file;
  • required regulatory information is missing (passport number, address of stay, emergency contact);
  • the ticket includes a segment operated by a partner, or the booking was changed after issuance;
  • the passenger is travelling with an infant, a pet, or has requested assistance.

If the message persists, Qatar Airways customer service can unlock the booking by phone, and the airport counter remains the fallback option. Arrive early, especially if you're travelling with checked baggage or a document that needs checking. On segments operated by other carriers, Alaska Airlines's conditions may apply instead of Qatar Airways'. You can also have your online check-in handled by iBoardingPass, which completes it automatically as soon as it opens and sends the boarding pass by email.

Frequently asked questions

How far in advance can you check in with Qatar Airways?

Online check-in opens several hours before scheduled departure. Some routes subject to tighter checks open later: the exact time appears on your booking.

What time does Qatar Airways check-in close?

Online, check-in closes before departure, at a time shown on your booking. At the airport, the counter and baggage drop close earlier than boarding, and the timing depends on the stopover. Arrive with a comfortable margin.

Where do you check in for Qatar Airways at Paris-Charles de Gaulle?

The airline's counters open several hours before the flight. The terminal shown on your booking and the airport screens are the reference on departure day.

Is the Qatar Airways app required to board?

No. The boarding pass can be shown on a phone or printed. Some airports and destinations still ask for a paper version or a counter visit for document checks.

Why isn't my Qatar Airways online check-in working?

Most often, the flight isn't open yet, the deadline has passed, the name doesn't match the passport, some regulatory data is missing, or the ticket includes a segment operated by a partner. Customer service or the airport counter can then complete it for you.

Do you still need to visit the counter with checked baggage?

Yes. Even if you've checked in online, you must drop your bag at Qatar Airways' Bag Drop counter before the drop-off deadline, which is earlier than boarding time.

Is the seat assigned at check-in chargeable?

A standard seat is assigned free of charge based on availability. Preferred seats, with extra space or located at the front of the Economy cabin, are chargeable on most fares.
