Gulf Air Boarding Pass: Timings and Check-In Rules

Gulf Air, the national carrier of the Kingdom of Bahrain, connects Manama with Europe, the Gulf, the Indian subcontinent and Asia from its hub at Bahrain International Airport (BAH). Before every GF flight, passengers need to check in, obtain their boarding pass and, if travelling with checked luggage, drop it off in time. This page brings together the key points: when check-in opens and closes, what can be done online versus at the counter, and the situations that require a visit to an agent.

Online check-in opens24 hours before departureearly check-in departing from Bahrain (except flights to London)

When to check in for a Gulf Air flight

From Bahrain, Gulf Air offers early check-in: passengers in all classes flying to any network destination except London can check in with their baggage up to 24 hours before departure. Bags are then accepted between 10:00 and 14:00 local time, and the boarding pass is issued on the spot, just as with standard check-in.

For flights covered by this exception (London) and for departures from other network stations, check-in follows the usual procedures, either online or at the airport counters. The opening time and the cut-off time that apply to your flight are shown on your booking confirmation or in the Manage My Booking section of gulfair.com.

When it comes to closing times, it is best to plan ahead: the check-in cut-off varies by airport and destination, and a passenger who arrives after the counter has closed will no longer be accepted, even with a boarding pass in hand. Check the exact time stated on your booking and allow for the security processing times specific to your departure airport.

Online, on the app or at the counter

Gulf Air offers check-in through its website, under the Manage / Check-in section, where you enter your booking reference and passenger name. The airline notes on this page that you can also select your seat and choose your meal there. Gulf Air also has a mobile app. No app is required: a boarding pass printed at the counter remains just as valid.

At the airport, the airline provides dedicated check-in areas for Falcon Gold customers as well as Gold and Silver members of the Falconflyer programme. Other passengers use the counters assigned to their travel class, and opening times depend on the airport.

From Bahrain International Airport, Gulf Air also offers a home check-in service called Hala Bahrain: an agent comes to your home, hotel or office, hands over boarding passes and baggage tags, then takes the luggage to the airport. It is booked at the time of ticket purchase on gulfair.com and remains available within 24 hours of the flight. Published rates start at BHD 20 for two passengers and up to four bags, subject to change. Service fees are non-refundable, and booking changes are allowed up to 8 hours before departure.

The boarding pass: formats and checks

Once check-in is confirmed, the boarding pass shows your name, the GF flight number, the scheduled boarding gate, the check-in cut-off time and your seat. It can be presented on a phone or on paper; both formats are accepted at security and at the gate.

Certain situations prevent a boarding pass from being issued remotely and require a visit to the counter. This is generally the case for:

  • travellers whose visa or documents need to be checked before the flight, as the airline states that visa or documentation issues must be resolved before check-in;
  • unaccompanied minors and requests for special assistance;
  • tickets including a segment operated by another airline, where check-in then depends on the carrier operating that flight;
  • groups and bookings changed shortly before departure.

Depending on the destination, an in-person check of travel documents may still be required before security, even after online check-in: allow enough time for this.

Baggage and the airport journey

Checking in does not remove the need to drop off checked baggage. Gulf Air highlights an allowance that depends on class, fare and route: it is shown on your ticket, and any excess is paid when you drop off your bags. Passengers who used home check-in have their bags weighed, sealed and transported to Bahrain International Airport; they then head straight to security and immigration, bypassing the check-in counters.

Cabin baggage must meet size and weight limits specific to the airline and your travel class: check them on your booking, especially if you are travelling on a fare with a reduced allowance.

Common issues and solutions

Is check-in rejecting your booking reference? Check that the name entered matches your passport exactly and that the flight is indeed operated by Gulf Air: a GF code sold but operated by a partner airline must be checked in with the operating carrier. If the booking was made through a travel agency, the record can take a few hours to become accessible.

Boarding pass not received, no seat assigned, passport changed after booking: these cases are handled at the Gulf Air counter at the airport, or through the airline's customer service. In case of delay or cancellation after home check-in, the airline advises contacting Gulf Air directly regarding bags that have already been checked in.

Finally, a missed cut-off time cannot always be made up: if the counter is closed, you will need to go through a rebooking desk, and change conditions depend on the fare purchased. Travellers who prefer not to keep track of check-in opening themselves can have it done by iBoardingPass, which takes care of it as soon as check-in opens and sends the boarding pass by email.

Other airlines in the region apply similar rules: see Emirates online check-in, Etihad Airways check-in procedures and El Al document checks.

Frequently asked questions

Gulf Air online check-in: how far in advance?

From Bahrain to any Gulf Air network destination except London, early check-in with baggage opens 24 hours before departure, with bags accepted between 10:00 and 14:00 local time. For other cases, the opening time that applies to your flight is shown on your booking confirmation or in the Manage My Booking section.

Until when can I show up at the Gulf Air counter?

The check-in cut-off depends on the departure airport and destination: it is shown on your booking. Allow enough time to arrive for formalities and checks, since boarding is no longer possible once the counter has closed.

Do I need to print my Gulf Air boarding pass?

No. The boarding pass can be shown on a phone or printed; both formats are accepted. Some document checks, however, require a visit to the counter before the security filters.

What is the Hala Bahrain home check-in service?

It is a paid Gulf Air service from Bahrain International Airport: an agent comes to your home, hotel or office, hands over boarding passes and baggage tags, then takes the luggage to the airport. It is booked on gulfair.com at the time of ticket purchase and is non-refundable; published rates depend on the number of passengers and bags and may change.

Can I check in online if my flight is operated by another airline?

No. A Gulf Air ticket with a segment operated by another carrier must be checked in with the airline actually operating that flight, following its own opening and closing times.

Are there counters reserved for certain passengers?

Yes. Gulf Air provides dedicated check-in areas for Falcon Gold customers as well as Gold and Silver members of the Falconflyer programme.
