EgyptAir Boarding Pass and Online Registration: What to Know

On EgyptAir flights, web check-in generally opens the day before departure and closes several hours before takeoff. According to the airline's public information, it typically opens around 24 hours before the scheduled departure time and closes a few hours beforehand: plan ahead and assume the window closes by the end of the day before your flight if you can't verify the exact times.

These schedules aren't uniform. They depend on the departure airport, the destination and local security or immigration requirements. Some flights, particularly to the United States, Canada or several African countries, require a document check that can limit or block remote check-in.

The exact time that applies is the one shown on your booking and in the confirmation sent by EgyptAir. Check it carefully, especially if your trip includes a connection in Cairo: check-in may then cover several segments at once. The same applies to airport counters, whose closing time is specific to each stopover and appears on your ticket.

Three routes lead to the same boarding pass. Web check-in is done through the check-in section of the airline's official website, by entering the booking or ticket number along with the passenger's name. The EGYPTAIR mobile app, available on iOS and Android, follows the same process and keeps the boarding pass stored on the phone. At equipped airports, self-service kiosks let you print your boarding pass and baggage tags.

A few points worth keeping in mind:

• Group check-ins, tickets issued by an agency with a special status, or bookings with a special service request (assistance, infant without a seat, pet in cabin) often need to go through the counter instead.
• If you booked a seat in advance or paid for extra baggage online, these should appear on your boarding pass: check them before confirming.
• On codeshare flights, the airline actually operating the flight handles check-in. For a combined journey with a Star Alliance member, the rules that apply are those of the operating carrier, for example Austrian Airlines check-in or Air Canada's procedures.

Once check-in is complete, EgyptAir makes the boarding pass available as a printable version, a PDF sent by email, and a mobile version in the app. The barcode or QR code is what's scanned at security checkpoints and the gate.

The electronic version isn't accepted everywhere. Several Egyptian and African airports still require a paper document, and some checkpoints require a stamp before granting access to restricted areas. If you're unsure about your departure airport, printing a copy avoids an extra line.

For international flights, your passport must match exactly the details entered during check-in. A name error, an expired passport or a missing visa is handled at the counter, not online.

Checking in remotely doesn't mean skipping the airport ahead of time. If you have checked baggage, you'll need to reach the Bag Drop counter or the standard counter before it closes, which happens well before boarding. On long-haul flights departing from Cairo, security checks take time: arriving three hours ahead remains a reasonable guideline, two hours for a domestic or short-haul flight.

EgyptAir also offers home printing of baggage tags at certain airports, as well as the option to purchase extra baggage online before departure. Allowances depend on the class, the route and loyalty status: Business class and flights to North America don't follow the same rules as a domestic one-way trip.

Travelers short on time can hand over their check-in to iBoardingPass, which completes it as soon as EgyptAir check-in opens and sends the boarding pass by email.

Is your online check-in being rejected? The usual causes are well known.

• Booking reference not recognized: use the six-character code from the EgyptAir reservation, not the one from the agency or comparison site, or failing that, the ticket number shown on your confirmation.
• Flight operated by a partner airline: check-in takes place with the operating carrier, such as Air India or Aegean, depending on the itinerary.
• Required document check: passport, visa or travel authorization need to be verified at the counter before the boarding pass is issued.
• Seat not assigned online: on certain fares, the seat is assigned automatically at check-in or at the gate.
• Boarding pass not received: check your spam folder, then go back through My Bookings to reissue it.
• Check-in closed: go to the counter as soon as possible, it remains the only option, and a passenger arriving after the counter has closed may be denied boarding under the conditions of carriage.

In case of a delay or cancellation, an issued boarding pass is no longer valid after rebooking: a new one is issued for the new flight, sometimes on another alliance carrier, for example ANA.
