Air Canada Online Check-in: Deadlines, Boarding Pass, and Airport Rules
With Air Canada, online or app check-in opens 24 hours before departure, and it closes 60 minutes before departure at the airport. Between those two points, the airline sets cutoff times that vary depending on whether the flight is domestic, to the United States, or international, with a handful of airports that work differently. This page lays out those rules exactly as Air Canada publishes them, along with the situations where you'll need to see an agent rather than use the app.

When to check in with Air Canada
Online and app check-in with Air Canada, sometimes called advance check-in, opens 24 hours before departure. For a morning flight, that means checking in the evening before. Earlier than that, the check-in button simply won't appear, even if the booking has been confirmed for weeks. At the airport, self-service kiosks accept check-in within 12 hours of the flight.
The deadline that matters on travel day is check-in closure: 60 minutes before departure in the general case, for domestic flights as well as flights to the United States and international destinations. After that cutoff, Air Canada no longer issues a boarding pass for the flight, and baggage drop closes at the same time.
Two further deadlines follow. You need to be at the gate 30 minutes before departure for a domestic or U.S. flight, 45 minutes before departure for an international flight, and the gate closes 15 minutes before departure.
Air Canada's airport deadlines at a glance
Air Canada publishes a table broken down by flight type. All times are counted before scheduled departure.
| Step | Domestic flights | Flights to or from the United States | International flights (including Mexico and the Caribbean) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Check-in and baggage drop opens | 240 min | 180 min | 180 min |
| Check-in and baggage drop closes | 60 min | 60 min | 60 min |
| Gate arrival deadline | 30 min | 30 min | 45 min |
| Boarding gate closes | 15 min | 15 min | 15 min |
The airline states that arriving late at the gate can lead to your reserved seat being reassigned, your booking being cancelled, or losing eligibility for denied boarding compensation. The gate deadline isn't a suggestion.
Exceptions worth knowing
The general table has exceptions, which the same Air Canada help page spells out.
- Within Canada, Air Canada states that baggage drop closes 45 minutes before departure.
- At Toronto's Billy Bishop Airport (YTZ), intra-Canada flights close check-in 30 minutes before departure and baggage drop 25 minutes before. For U.S. flights from there, the cutoff is 60 minutes, and the airline asks passengers to arrive 90 minutes early to clear security and U.S. preclearance.
- In Athens, Lisbon, Rome Fiumicino, and London Heathrow, counters open 240 minutes before departure, or four hours.
- At Toronto Pearson, for a flight to the United States or internationally departing before 9 a.m., Air Canada asks passengers not to arrive more than three hours before departure.
The Canada-wide baggage drop rule (45 minutes) doesn't quite match the general table (60 minutes): when in doubt, go by the deadline printed on your itinerary.
What you need to check in online
To find your flight, Air Canada accepts one of these three identifiers:
- the 6-character alphanumeric booking reference (for example A1B23C);
- your 9-digit Aeroplan number;
- your 13-digit ticket number, which starts with 014.
You'll also need the travel documents required for your destination, a passport or other government-issued ID. For travel to the United States, check-in also asks for the address where you'll be staying.
Checking in online or in the app, step by step
- Open check-in on the Air Canada website or app, available on iOS and Android, starting 24 hours before departure.
- Enter your booking reference, Aeroplan number, or ticket number, then the passenger's name.
- Review the requested travel documents.
- Choose or change your seat, and indicate how many bags you're checking, paying any applicable fees.
- Print your boarding pass or send it to your mobile device.
During check-in, Air Canada also offers, depending on eligibility, a same-day change or standby for an earlier flight, an upgrade using eUpgrade credits or a last-minute paid upgrade, adding your Aeroplan number, and uploading health documents.
Boarding pass: printed or electronic
Air Canada calls what most travelers know as the boarding pass a "boarding card." After check-in, you can print it at home or receive it electronically, in the Air Canada app, by email, or by text message. Without a printer, an airport self-service kiosk will print it for you.
The electronic version is a barcode carrying the same information as the paper version. It's available for Air Canada, Air Canada Rouge, and Air Canada Express flights departing from most served airports, with an e-ticket. It isn't available in three cases:
- the departure airport doesn't offer the service;
- the flight is operated by another carrier;
- the booking has more than four passengers, or includes an infant under two.
In those cases, the boarding pass is printed at home or at a kiosk. Either way, you need it in hand before check-in closes, 60 minutes before departure.
Getting through the airport
Once you've checked in online, the airport process happens in three steps.
- A check-in kiosk prints your bag tags, which you attach yourself. If there's no kiosk, move to the next step.
- Checked bags are dropped at the Air Canada baggage counter, no later than 60 minutes before departure in the general case. Drop-off opens up to four hours before departure.
- With only carry-on luggage, you head straight to security, then to the gate.
Air Canada notes that once the baggage counter closes, no more bags are accepted. Oversized or excess baggage takes longer to check in.
When you need an agent instead
Some passengers must check in with an agent at the airport. Air Canada specifically mentions:
- children traveling under the unaccompanied minor service;
- customers who need medical assistance or a wheelchair, or whose booking includes a special request;
- passengers traveling with a pet, whether in the cabin or in the hold.
Departing from Algeria, Cuba, or Morocco, the boarding pass must be collected from an agent. And if the first flight of your itinerary is operated by a carrier other than Air Canada, check-in happens with that carrier instead.
If online check-in won't go through for another reason, two options remain at the airport: self-service kiosks, usable within 12 hours of the flight, and Air Canada agents, provided you arrive before check-in closes, 60 minutes before departure.
Traveling as a group
A group can check in online or in the app, but only in batches of up to 9 passengers. A group of 27 people therefore needs three separate check-ins. You'll need the booking reference, each member's first and last name entered one by one, and the 13-digit ticket numbers.
Flights to the United States
For a flight to the United States departing from Canada, U.S. customs and border protection formalities take place in Canada, before departure. This preclearance process is why counters open 180 minutes before the flight and why passengers are asked to arrive 90 minutes early at Billy Bishop. Online check-in also asks for your U.S. stay address.
Having iBoardingPass check you in
iBoardingPass is an independent service, with no business relationship with Air Canada, that handles check-in on your behalf and sends you the boarding pass as soon as it's available. The benefit is straightforward: the check-in window opens 24 hours before departure, often in the middle of the night once you factor in the time difference on a transatlantic flight.
You provide your booking reference and passenger name, the service watches for check-in to open, completes the process, and sends you the boarding pass by email. You're still free to check in yourself, and you remain responsible for your travel documents and the information provided. The service doesn't replace baggage drop or the walk to the gate. Discover the service.
