Air Serbia Online Check-In and Boarding Pass: Times and Rules

Air Serbia (flight code JU) opens online check-in 48 hours before departure and closes it 1 hour before departure on most routes, with earlier closing times for departures from certain cities. Your boarding pass can then be retrieved on your smartphone, by email, or printed, while checked baggage drop-off at the airport runs until 45 minutes before departure. This page brings together the deadlines, the special cases, and the situations that can block check-in, from flights out of Belgrade to long-haul routes to New York or Shanghai.

When Air Serbia check-in opens and closes

Online check-in opens 48 hours before departure and closes 1 hour before departure in the standard case. Several airports are exceptions and close noticeably earlier: it is best to assume your flight might be one of them and check in as soon as the window opens.

At the airport, Air Serbia counters generally open two hours before departure, and earlier still for New York and Chicago according to the airline's published information. The self-service kiosks at Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport, on the other hand, are accessible the day before the flight for most destinations.

Checking in online or with the Air Serbia app

Check-in can be done through the airline's website, under the Check-in or My Booking section, or via the Air Serbia mobile app. It is open for Air Serbia flights departing from a long list of airports, from Belgrade to Paris, Amsterdam, London, Istanbul, New York, or Shanghai.

A few limits to keep in mind before relying on it:

  • Codeshare flights carrying a four-digit number (for example JU8234) can only be checked in through the website of the airline actually operating the flight, under that airline's own rules.
  • The airline states that online check-in is unavailable for passengers who need a visa to enter EU countries, Norway, or Switzerland, due to EES regulations: these travelers must go to the counter.

If a specific seat matters to you, sort out your seating before online check-in opens.

Getting and presenting your boarding pass

Once check-in is confirmed, Air Serbia lets you send the boarding pass to your smartphone and keep it as a mobile ticket, send it by email, or print it. The barcode is scanned at the security checkpoint and then again at the gate.

Keep your passport or ID card within reach: travel documents and, where applicable, your visa are checked either at the counter or at the boarding gate. For long-haul flights and visa destinations, it is wise to stop at the counter even without checked baggage so your documents can be verified.

The boarding gate closes about twenty minutes before boarding the aircraft, and earlier for New York, Chicago, Guangzhou, and Shanghai. Holding a boarding pass therefore does not mean you can skip being in the boarding area well ahead of the posted time.

Baggage and getting through the airport

With cabin baggage only and check-in already done, you can head straight to passport control and security. With a checked bag, you need to go through a bag-drop counter or kiosk: check-in closes 45 minutes before departure, with an earlier cutoff for New York, Chicago, Toronto, Guangzhou, and Shanghai.

At the Belgrade kiosks, the process runs through a few steps: scanning the ticket or the boarding pass barcode, printing the bag tag after the allowance is checked, attaching the tag to the suitcase, scanning the barcode, then waiting for drop-off confirmation.

Priority check-in counters are reserved for customers who have paid for that service or who are traveling in business class, and this service is not offered at every airport served by Air Serbia. A passenger who has paid for priority check-in can also use Web Check-In and then drop their bag at the priority baggage counter.

When check-in does not work

The most common issue comes from a flight bought through Air Serbia but operated by another airline: codeshare flights, identifiable by their four-digit flight number, are checked in with the airline actually operating the flight, whose rules may differ from Air Serbia's. Check the flight number on your ticket, then the airline name shown next to it.

If the online window closes before you manage to finish, check-in is still possible at the airport counter, within the time limits listed above. Allow extra time and check the exact time shown on your booking, which takes precedence over any general rule. iBoardingPass carries out online check-in on the traveler's behalf, as soon as the airline's check-in window opens, and sends the boarding pass by email.

Other airlines serve the same airports as the Serbian carrier, sometimes with very different deadlines: see the rules for Air France, those of the Greek carrier Aegean, Air Baltic, Air Europa, the Irish carrier Aer Lingus, or Aeroitalia.

It closes about twenty minutes before boarding the aircraft, and earlier for flights to New York, Chicago, Guangzhou, and Shanghai.

Why is online check-in refused to me?

The airline sets out two cases: a codeshare flight with a four-digit number (such as JU8234), which is checked in on the website of the airline operating the flight, and passengers who need a visa to enter EU countries, Norway, or Switzerland, who must go to the counter due to EES regulations.
