Widerøe check in: deadlines, app and boarding pass

According to information published by the airline, online and app check-in with Widerøe becomes available 22 hours before scheduled departure. At the airport, the staffed counter opens 120 minutes before departure; on Norwegian domestic flights, it generally opens 90 minutes before departure.

The closing time is what deserves your attention. On international flights, check-in closes 45 minutes before departure, and the airline asks travellers to be at the gate 30 minutes before departure, with the gate itself closing 15 minutes before. On domestic flights, the airline sets shorter margins: check-in generally closes 30 minutes before departure, gate presence is required 20 minutes before, and the gate closes 10 minutes before. These times can change, so treat them as a minimum and plan to arrive earlier.

These deadlines belong to the airport: once check-in has closed, boarding can be refused even if you are already inside the terminal. Build in some margin, especially if you still need to drop a bag or clear a border check. Widerøe recommends arriving at least 45 minutes before departure if you need assistance, and checking in at least one hour before departure if you are travelling with an animal.

Always check the exact time printed on your confirmation: it overrides any general rule.

Three routes lead to your Widerøe boarding pass, and they don't all suit every trip.

• Widerøe app (iOS and Android): tap Check in to complete the process and receive a digital boarding pass, usable at the security checkpoint and then at boarding. The app also pushes flight updates.
• wideroe.no, My Trips section: sign in, select Check in, then either use the digital pass or have its barcode scanned at an airport kiosk to print it. The airline notes that online check-in on wideroe.no may run through an external check-in service.
• Self-service kiosk: available at a selection of airports, including Alta, Bergen, Bodø, Evenes (Harstad/Narvik), Kirkenes, Kristiansand, Kristiansund, Lakselv, Molde, Oslo, Sandefjord, Stavanger, Tromsø, Trondheim and Ålesund. Enter your booking reference and surname, choose a seat, add your Norwegian Reward number, print the boarding pass and, if needed, the baggage tag.

If your trip doesn't show up, the booking reference and surname are enough to find it.

Some travellers can't check in remotely and must go to the counter: unaccompanied minor (UM), assistance request, special baggage. When an itinerary combines several airlines, check-in happens with whichever one operates the first flight. If your connection is handled by another carrier, take a look at its rules, for example those of Norwegian, whose Reward programme can also be entered at the Widerøe kiosk.

The digital boarding pass appears in the app or under My Trips; it works at the security checkpoint and at the gate. If you'd rather have paper, the kiosk can print it from the barcode.

On flights to international destinations, the airline states that you must be checked in (website, app, kiosk or counter) and hold a valid boarding pass to access the airport's duty-free shops. On a domestic flight with cabin baggage only, you can go straight to the gate as long as you're checked in and able to show a valid boarding pass.

On the paperwork side: the carrier may require the presentation of a valid ID and may deny boarding in the absence of necessary travel documents such as a passport or visa. A valid ID (or the payment card used for the purchase, depending on the fare conditions) may be requested at check-in and again at the gate. For a child travelling alone without an ID card, the guardian must confirm the child's identity at check-in and at departure. Youth, student or senior fares rely on an accurate date of birth: incorrect information can lead to a refusal at check-in or boarding.

Check-in only covers half the process when you're travelling with checked baggage. Once the boarding pass has been printed at a kiosk, the bag needs a tag and then goes to the baggage drop area; the staffed counter also accepts bags during its opening hours. Baggage drop closes at the latest by the time check-in closes, sometimes earlier depending on the airport, so arrive well ahead.

A practical case for early departures: 30 minutes before departure. This comes in handy when the first flight leaves very early in the morning.

Baggage allowance depends on the fare purchased and, where relevant, on the airline operating that segment. Special baggage always requires a counter visit. The check-in page can't find my booking. Enter the booking reference and surname exactly as shown on the ticket. If the first flight of the itinerary is operated by another airline, check-in happens with that carrier.

I can't check in online. Online check-in on wideroe.no may be temporarily unavailable and switch to an external service. The kiosks at the airports listed above and the counter remain options, within their opening hours.

I'm checked in but have no boarding pass. Reopen the app or My Trips: the digital pass is there. At a kiosk, scanning the barcode lets you print it.

My schedule changed. Widerøe communicates by email to the address given at booking; if departure moves more than one hour earlier or arrival is delayed more than three hours, a refund may be possible under the fare conditions if no other flight suits you. For a booking change, the airline asks to be contacted no later than one hour before scheduled departure.

I'm worried about cutting it close. Treat check-in closing time as a firm deadline, and the gate as an even stricter one. iBoardingPass checks in on the traveller's behalf as soon as the airline opens check-in and sends the boarding pass by email.
