Afriqiyah Airways Boarding Pass: Counters and Deadlines
Afriqiyah Airways flies from Tripoli to destinations across the Arab world and Africa, with check-in procedures that vary noticeably from one airport to another. On most of its flights, the boarding pass is issued at the airline counter, after passport control and baggage drop. This page brings together what you need to know before heading to the airport: cut-off times, required documents, baggage rules and solutions if something goes wrong.

When to arrive: check-in opening and closing times
Afriqiyah Airways does not publish a single, uniform schedule: acceptance conditions depend on the departure airport and the local authorities. In practice, for international flights departing from Tripoli (Mitiga) as well as from African and Middle Eastern stopovers, it is wise to arrive at the terminal at least three hours before the scheduled departure time, and two hours for a domestic flight.
Useful benchmarks, to be confirmed on your booking or with the airline's customer service centre:
| Step | Safe benchmark |
|---|---|
| Arrival at the terminal (international) | at least three hours before departure |
| Arrival at the terminal (domestic) | at least two hours before departure |
| Counter closing time | depends on the airport, check your ticket |
| Arrival at the gate | as soon as boarding is announced, don't wait for the final call |
The exact closing time is shown on your ticket and on the terminal display boards. It is best to work to the earliest time given: a passenger who arrives after the counter has closed may be denied boarding, even with a seat already assigned. Late-checked bags also raise a liability issue: the airline states that bags checked in late are only accepted with a Limited Release Tag.
Online check-in, app and boarding pass
According to Afriqiyah Airways' public information, check-in is mainly handled at the counter: the airline refers to its passenger acceptance platform at the airport, where you can also request a wheelchair if this was not arranged at the time of booking. Whether online or app-based check-in is available depends on the stopover and the system used by the local handling agent, so don't assume you will have a boarding pass on your phone.
Whether your boarding pass is printed at the counter or obtained online, check before leaving the desk: the spelling of your name as it appears on your passport, the flight number and date, the boarding gate and time, your seat, and the number of baggage tags stapled to your stub. On a connecting itinerary, ask whether the boarding pass for the second leg is issued at departure or only at the stopover: the airline only checks bags through to the destination confirmed on the ticket.
A valid passport, the visa required by the arrival country and your booking reference remain essential at the counter. Health and documentation requirements change depending on the destination, so check them before heading to the airport.
Baggage: the step that decides your arrival time
Baggage drop-off is what determines how much time you should allow on site. Afriqiyah Airways points out that baggage check-in rules vary by airport and must be followed accordingly, and that all bags are liable to inspection. The airline reserves the right to refuse a bag whose size, weight or condition poses a risk.
Worth knowing before you join the queue:
- A bag over 32 kg is treated as oversized and is only accepted with a Limited Release Tag, as are fragile items, strollers, car seats, bicycles, skis, golf clubs or musical instruments.
- Your name and contact details must appear on every bag.
- Bags containing alcoholic drinks or narcotics are refused.
- Valuables, medication, documents, electronic devices and jewellery should travel in the cabin: the airline declines responsibility for these items placed in the hold.
- Live animals are only allowed in the cabin for guide dogs and hearing assistance dogs, inside a soft-sided container whose combined length, width and height does not exceed 115 cm. For hold travel, you check in together with your animal, after contacting the airline for booking and arrangements. Bringing live animals into Libya requires a certificate from the Libyan National Centre for Animal Health.
Common issues and what to do
Name misspelled on your booking: have it corrected before arriving at the airport, since the boarding pass must match your passport exactly. Flight changed or delayed: Afriqiyah Airways' schedules can shift, particularly on African stopovers, and the check-in deadline follows the new departure time, not the original one. Booking made through an agency: the agency may hold the file, and you may need to go through it for any changes before check-in.
For a wheelchair or other assistance, request it at the time of booking or at the passenger acceptance counter. Damaged or missing baggage on arrival: report it to the airport's baggage service before leaving the arrivals area and keep your tags. The airline's customer service centre can also be contacted using the number shown on the airline's official site.
If you would rather not track the check-in opening yourself, iBoardingPass can carry out online check-in on your behalf as soon as it opens and send you the boarding pass by email.
Frequently asked questions
Does Afriqiyah Airways offer online check-in?
The airline mainly operates through airport acceptance counters, and whether remote check-in is available depends on the departure stopover. Plan to arrive at the counter with your passport and booking reference, and check the details on your ticket or with the airline's customer service.
How long before the flight should I arrive at the airport?
As a safe rule of thumb, three hours before departure for an international flight and two hours for a domestic flight. Counter closing times vary by airport and are shown on your booking and on the terminal display boards.
What happens if I check in my bag at the last minute?
A bag checked in late is only accepted with a Limited Release Tag, which limits Afriqiyah Airways' liability in case of damage. If the counter has already closed, acceptance may be refused.
At what weight is a bag considered oversized?
Above 32 kg, a bag is treated as oversized or heavy and falls under the Limited Release Tag. Included allowances depend on your fare and itinerary.
Can I bring my pet into the cabin?
Afriqiyah Airways only allows guide dogs for blind passengers and hearing assistance dogs for deaf passengers in the cabin. The soft-sided, leak-proof container must stay under the seat and must not exceed 115 cm in combined length, width and height.
How do I request a wheelchair?
The request can be made at the time of booking or directly at the airport's passenger acceptance platform. The wheelchair is stored in the cabin if space allows, otherwise it travels in the hold.
