It applies to flights operated by Luxair Luxembourg Airlines, with a handful of destinations excluded and others where the boarding pass still has to be printed at the counter. This page brings together the deadlines, special cases (return flights, evening-before check-in in Luxembourg, LuxairTours packages) and the baggage rules that shape your time at the airport.

When to check in: opening and closing times

Luxair's web and mobile check-in opens 36 hours before departure scheduled departure. The closing time depends on your fare: 45 minutes before departure, with a 30 minute cut-off for Business according to the fare structure published by the airline.

The Luxair Web & Mobile Check-in page also states that the online service remains available up to 1 hour before flight departure. Give yourself plenty of margin and double-check the exact time shown on your booking confirmation.

Online check-in may also be restricted on certain dates for operational reasons: a message will then direct you to the counter.

Online, mobile, kiosk: Luxair's check-in options

Luxair offers check-in from a computer, phone or tablet, as well as self-service kiosks at the airport. For check-in online, keep your booking confirmation and e-ticket handy.

A few limits worth knowing:

  • The service only applies to flights operated by Luxair Luxembourg Airlines. On a codeshare flight operated by another carrier, the operating airline's conditions apply instead.
  • Availability varies by destination. Luxair states that online check-in is not available when departing from Brač (BWK), Burgas (BOJ), Dubrovnik (DBV), Enfidha (NBE), Pescara (PSR), Rimini (RMI), Tivat (TIV), Toulon (TLN), Varna (VAR) and Zadar (ZAD). This often comes up on the return flight.
  • When departing from Agadir (AGA), Djerba (DJE), Malta (MLA), Marsa Alam (RMF), Monastir (MIR) and Tunis (TUN), online check-in exists, but local regulations require going to the counter to have the boarding pass printed, even without checked luggage.

Online check-in is not presented by Luxair as compulsory: the counter and kiosks remain an available option. Travellers on a LuxairTours package follow the arrangements specific to their booking, detailed on their confirmation.

Your boarding pass and seat selection

Once check-in is confirmed, the boarding pass is issued immediately, to be shown on mobile or printed.

Seats can be chosen at booking or during check-in, with prices depending on the fare class: on Light, a standard seat is chargeable (€15), as is a Front seat (€21); on Smart, the standard seat is included; on Flex, both standard and Front seats are included; First and Exit row seats cost €29 or €50 outside Business. These amounts come from the fare structure published by the airline and may change.

If your destination requires printing at the counter, the boarding pass obtained online is not enough on its own: allow time to stop at the terminal before security.

Baggage: what check-in does not cover

Online check-in does not remove the need to drop off checked luggage at the Luxair counter or bag-drop point, within the deadlines posted at the departure airport.

  • Cabin: 55 x 40 x 23 cm for the main cabin baggage, 40 x 30 x 20 cm for the personal item cm, up to a maximum weight of 8 kg. In Business, two cabin bags of 8 kg each are allowed.
  • Checked: 23 kg.
  • Adding an extra bag once at the airport costs more: Luxair charges €79 at booking or during online check-in, versus €89.
  • Any cabin bag exceeding 55 x 40 x 23 cm at the boarding gate is charged €89, regardless of fare or ticket allowance; the same rule applies if other cabin baggage rules are not met, for example carrying more items than allowed. Excess weight on checked luggage (from 23 to 32 kg) costs a flat €60, and is not permitted on Business bags of 32 kg.

Baggage handling is therefore not something check-in settles online: only the passenger, and where relevant the purchase of extra allowance, are dealt with there.

Evening-before check-in in Luxembourg

At Luxembourg Airport, Luxair offers check-in the evening before an early morning flight. The service runs from 7:30pm to 10:30pm for Luxair flights departing the next morning between 6:00am and 9:00am.

Here's how it works: you need to present a valid ID card or passport at check-in the evening before, you receive your boarding pass, and you head straight to security on the day of departure. Checked luggage stays at the airport overnight and is loaded onto your flight. Cabin baggage must still comply with Luxair's policy to avoid any delay.

Groups of up to 9 passengers under the same booking reference are accepted: one adult in the group, who is also travelling, carries out the check-in, original ID cards or passports for all passengers are presented, and each bag is tagged and checked in individually, without pooling. From 10 passengers upward, the group organiser should contact Luxair's Groups department at group@luxairgroup.lu at least 5 days before departure.

Common issues and solutions

Online check-in won't work: first check that your flight is indeed operated by Luxair Luxembourg Airlines, then that your departure airport is among those covered by the service. A block can also come from a temporary operational restriction, as online check-in may be limited on certain dates.

Travel document not recognised: the name entered must match the one on the ticket, and the ID card or passport must be valid.

Boarding pass not received: go back into your check-in and try again, the document can be reissued as long as check-in remains open. After 45 minutes before departure, you'll need to turn to counter staff.

Special assistance, an animal in the cabin, special baggage (bike, golf bag), unaccompanied minor: these cases are handled in advance with Luxair customer service, reachable at +352 2456-1 from 7:00am to 7:00pm, and are finalised at the counter. iBoardingPass can carry out online check-in on the traveller's behalf as soon as the airline's check-in opens and send the boarding pass by email.
